Our Confidential Concoctions

We’re kicking off our blog by letting you in on some of our deepest darkest secrets. No, it’s got nothing to do with who we liked in seventh grade. After much consideration, we’ve decided to share a handful of our secret recipes with serious beer drinkers. They weren’t passed down from our Great-Grandmother, but they do require a secret handshake.

We’ll start you off with something really simple.

Queen Latifah

Since ancient times, all along the Nile River people thirst everyday for their favorite elixir, a royal cure-all brought to all people by a Queen Latifah. Nah, we’re just kidding. That’s just the name of our rendition of the Black and Tan.

Queen Latifah makes appearances by request only, and don’t go thinking just because you’re on a first name basis with this royal lady she’s willing to meet everyone. She’s for the adventurous beer drinker only.

Recipe: Get a healthy half pour of our delicious Pomona Queen amber lager and top the glass off with California Black Beer. We’ll make it for you at the tap room, or you can concoct it on your own time.

Black Hops

This recipe isn’t rocket science; we figured that a hoppy IPA like ours is the perfect balance for something a bit more malty like California Black Beer. So we tried it out, and let’s just say any adjectives we could possibly use to describe it fall short.

We’ve got some people working on a word for it as we speak.

Recipe:  To reach Black Hops bliss, simply take half Runway IPA and half California Black Beer, sip and enjoy.

Drag Queen

There’s some disagreement whether the title of this recipe refers to the Queen’s wardrobe, or to the parts of an airplane that are affected by wind during high velocity passes. Either way – the blend of these beers is akin to a slightly bready, biscuity pale ale that contains the Runway IPA’s tropical fruit flavors providing a refreshing bite and a lasting finish.

Recipe: Just mix one-part Pomona Queen with one-part Runway IPA, take a drink and either feel the wind rush across your face, or be overcome with a sudden urge to cross-dress. Results may vary.

Queen of the Tropics

Drift away to your happy place with this tropical blend that leaves little to be desired. The mixture of our smooth amber lager with our organic mango and pineapple juice infused IPA will make you feel like you’re lounging in the tropics with the Queen herself. Feel like royalty with every sip of this juicy, nectar-like combo.

The perfect blend for those who prefer the fruity flavor of our Mango Shandy IPA without all the bite.

Recipe: Your wish is our command. We’ll pour in half Mango Shandy, and then take the edge off with a generous pour of Pomona Queen. You’ll be transported to a tropical state of mind in no time. *Sunscreen not included.

Shady Shandy

The perfect refresher for a balmy summer day or evening; we can assure you, Shady Shandy lives up to her reputation. Her sweet and malty flavors will surely leave you wanting seconds. Our Mango IPA balances wonderfully with the chocolate notes in our dark lager to make a blend you won’t soon forget.

Like any good fruit and chocolate pairing, this blend highlights the sweetly crisp notes of the Shandy with the subtle rich flavor of our California Black Beer.

Recipe: Mango Shandy and California Black Beer, straight up. You won’t regret finding refuge in the shade with this one.

Evil Empress

Our more robust version of a “Black and Tan”, the Evil Empress is the ideal blend for those who crave a little more bite in their pint. The Inland Empress, which is our “bulked up” Pomona Queen recipe, blends harmoniously well with the equally potent Badlands Baltic Porter. The forward biscuit and caramel notes in the Inland Empress counterbalance with the bold coffee, nutty, and licorice qualities that are in our Baltic porter to create this sinful concoction.

Not for the faint of heart, the Evil Empress does not disappoint.

Recipe: One part Inland Empress, one part Badlands Porter, all parts evil.

Shark Bite

Enjoy our smooth and creamy Irish-style stout by itself, or crank it up a notch by floating it atop our Sour Cran-Cherry Queen for a one-of-a-kind blend. The prominent malt and coffee flavor of our full-bodied stout gets a seriously tasty shock when it collides with the tart and fruity flavors of our crimson colored sour beer.

This is one distinctly unique blend that will leave you craving more, bite after bite.

Recipe: Shot in the Dark Stout with a gushing stream of Sour Cran-Cherry Queen.

Carmen Miranda

Get out your colorful, Carmen Miranda inspired headdress for this one; one sip of this sweet and sour blend will have you wanting to samba the night away. The sweet and tart flavors of our dry, cider-like Sour Cran-Cherry Queen blended with the oh-so-fruity Mango Shandy is the perfect combination for those with a sweet tooth.

Fruity, crisp, and fresh, our “Carmen Miranda” will definitely keep your palate entertained.

Recipe: Sour-Cran Cherry Queen swirled in with Mango Shandy. Is your mouth watering yet?

Runaway Train

“Hop” onto our train and enjoy the ride with our unique blend of Runway IPA and Irish stout. The bitterness from our IPA compliments the strong coffee notes in the Shot in the Dark Stout to create a bold, yet smooth combination that will have you chugging along for hours.

Recipe: Runway IPA streamlined with Shot in Dark. Next stop, bliss.

These next recipes are only available during certain times of the year. They are sort of like the eggnog or peeps of Dale Bros.:

Hoppy Hullabaloo (Fall Seasonal)

When autumn begins to change the landscape, you can look at that pile of leaves in the yard and sip our special recipe dedicated to beer season. Then pass the rake on to your son; it builds character.

Blending these beers creates a pint that contains the Oktober Fiesta’s seasonally satisfying roasty nuttiness alongside the crisp hop flavor from the Runway IPA. This hop presence adds an interesting counterpoint to the Oktober Fiesta’s rich maltiness.

Recipe: One hearty pour of Runway IPA plus one good pour of Oktober Fiesta.

Dude Looks Like a Lady (Spring Seasonal)

Is it lager? Is it ale? Perhaps a little bit of both, and we like it! The bitter, hoppy notes and floral aroma of our English pale ale combine nicely with the biscuity ones of our flagship amber lager, adding a little more complexity to these two delicious beers. Even if you’re not sure on how to identify it, take our word for it and give it a try.

Recipe: Dude of York crossed with Pomona Queen. Take a walk on the wild side.

Dude of Darkness (Spring Seasonal)

He may sound intimidating at first, but fear not, our Dude of Darkness aims to please. This blend involves the roasty chocolate notes of our dark lager coming through to meet with the fruity bitterness of the English pale ale, providing a surprisingly tasty blend. ¬Highly recommended for those who enjoy a mildly bitter beer.

Recipe: Dude of York and California Black Beer.

Eclipse (Summer Seasonal)

When our dark and summer lagers cross paths, a very delightful thing happens to our taste buds. The light, crisp flavors in the Pacific Daylight converge with the roastier flavors in our CA Black Beer to create a reddish-hued blend perfect for when you’re feeling indecisive. This well-balanced phenomenon will have you discovering new depths of flavor with every sip.

Recipe: California Black Beer shadowed over some Pacific Daylight.

Pomona Sunrise (Summer Seasonal)

In the summer months things heat up, sometimes unbearably. So rather than standing next to an open freezer door contemplating how well that bag of frozen peas would cool our necks. We went to the drawing board to create a refreshing beer mixture that has the taste of summer.

The full flavors of Pomona Queen embrace the sweetness of Pacific Daylight and make you wish summer would never end.

Recipe: Your glass half full with Pomona Queen and finish ‘er up with Pacific Daylight.
This mix is sure to make you take advantage of sweet deals on watermelon.
